Crime TV Shows
Banacek (1972–1974)
Banacek was a short-lived—but clever and thoroughly entertaining—detective show on NBC in the early 70s. It was part of The NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie anthology that the network used to rotate detective dramas.
George Peppard stars as the titular character, a private investigator who does one thing and one thing only.
He solves thefts.
(Sounds like a bit like a new show on Apple TV+.)
Hired by insurance companies to recover high-value stolen goods, his fee is 10% of the insured amount. Good work if you can get it. So Banacek never appears to work too hard, enjoying cigars and snifter in his mansion, and conferring with his private chauffeur.
It ran for 2 seasons, but isn’t streaming or available for digital rental or purchase. Look for it on DVD until it finds its ways into the Peacock library.
Riptide (1984–1986)
Created by 2 of the leading crime and action TV show producers of the 1980s, Frank Lupo and Stephen J. Cannell, Riptide is another short-lived NBC detective show. And an underrated one at that!
Two Vietnam War vets team up with their old computer nerd war buddy and open a detective agency in sunny Los Angeles. With all the necessary trappings of an 80s detective show, Nick, Cody, and Murray live on a 54′ 1939 Elco wooden motor yacht and somehow also have a speedboat, a 1962 Sikorsky S-58DT helicopter, a classic Corvette, and a robot.
And, of course, there’s also a yacht full of beautiful women living on the Barefoot Contessa, a large tourist boat across the dock.
It ran for 3 seasons, but unfortunately isn’t streaming anywhere. It’s not even for rent, so you’ll need to find it on DVD until NBC comes to its senses and adds it to Peacock’s library.
Superhero TV Shows
The Boys (2019–present)
SPOILER ALERT: This scene if from Season 2 of The Boys. So if you haven’t watched it yet and want to enjoy a bit of the mystery, stop reading now. And don’t look at the GIF below!
The infamous “head popper” killed a number of people, from a CIA agent to several members of Congress, and more. They were then revealed to be none other than Victoria Neuman. In this scene she blows up the head of Church of the Collective leader Alistair Adana. She not only makes a terrible mess of his drapes, what a waste of Fresca!
