October is almost here and Halloween is coming! Here are the trailers for 10 new original movies in October that we’re dying to see before Halloween.
📝 NOTE: Netflix essentially destroyed the real meaning of “original” with its Netflix Originals stunt, so now when we say original, we’re talking about movies that get their original wide release on a streaming service. Still, most streaming originals are produced with the involvement of the streaming platform they’re released on.

“Yup.”
“Nice.”
Totally Killer
Topping the list of the original new movies in October to hit streaming services is Totally Killer. Kiernan Shipka stars as “Jamie McFly” in a Back to the Future-ish slasher comedy in which she goes back to 1987 to stop the Sweet Sixteen Killer from carving up her mom’s friends.
(If that makes Gen-Xers feel old, she actually goes back 6 years more than Marty McFly did in the first movie.)
- Release Date: Oct 6, 2023
- Streamer: Prime Video
- Genre: Horror comedy
Reptile
A young realtor is brutally murdered and the hardened homicide cop assigned to crack the case begins to crack himself.
The second must-watch original streaming movie in October also drops on the 6th. That’s a Wednesday so it may come down to coin flip to see which gets watched first.
But a crime drama starring Benicio del Toro is hard to push aside. Especially when it’s also got Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Ato Essandoh, and Eric Bogosian in it.
- Release Date: Oct 6, 2023
- Streamer: Netflix
- Genre: Crime drama
Awareness
Next up on the slate of new movies in October to hit the stream is a Spanish-American co-production. Awareness is a sci-fi action thriller about a teen who has the power to make people hallucinate. He’d do alright in Vegas, but before he has a chance to hit the high-roller poker rooms, competing factions battle over his recruitment.
- Release Date: Oct 11, 2023
- Streamer: Prime Video
- Genre: Science fiction
In My Mother’s Skin
A folk horror film from the Philippines set during the waning days of World War 2. A family hides out in their country estate as they fend off Japanese soldiers in search of stolen gold. To defend her family, a young girl enlists the help of a flesh-eating fairy (or faerie, if you prefer).
It’s not truly a Prime original (as in Amazon Studios didn’t produce the film), but it locked down the worldwide distribution rights, which, as noted above, is what “original” has come to mean.
The trailer for In My mother’s Skin is enough to send goosebumps across your own.
- Release Date: Oct 12, 2023
- Streamer: Prime Video
- Genre: Horror
The Burial
From the annals of Inspired by True Events, Hollywood icons (and Oscar winners) Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones team up to take down a nasty funeral home corporation.
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Doug Wright — who adapted his own play for the Oscar-nominated Quills — wrote the screenplay. The Burial premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to positive reviews.
It looks like a feel good movie and it is — because we know how it ends. But that doesn’t matter, because you can never go wrong with Mr. Foxx.
- Release Date: Oct 13, 2023
- Streamer: Prime Video
- Genre: Legal drama
Fair Play
Everything’s rosy for a newly engaged couple — until she gets a promotion. What are they thinking, working at the same hedge fund? And what are they thinking, marrying hedge fund managers?
Fair Play premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last January to positive reviews, and last month audiences at the Toronto Film Festival seemed to agree with critics. It’s co-produced by MRC, who also produced House of Cards and Ozark for Netflix — as well as movies like Baby Driver, Babel, and The Adjustment Bureau, just to name a few.
- Release Date: Oct 13, 2023
- Streamer: Netflix
- Genre: Erotic thriller
Old Dads
Real-life old dad Bill Burr writes, produces, and makes his directorial debut in a comedy about — wait for it — old dads. Bokeem Woodbine and Bobby Cannavale co-star as his business partners (and other old dads?)
Judging by the trailer alone, it’s a perfect fit for fans of Burr’s stand-up comedy and long-running Monday Morning Podcast. This might very well be the most Gen X movie of the year.
- Release Date: Oct 20, 2023
- Streamer: Netflix
- Genre: Comedy
Pain Hustlers
Emily Blunt and Chis Evans star in Pain Hustlers, which is reason enough to watch it. Blunt stars as a high school dropout who lands a job at a fledgling Florida pharma startup.
Andy Garcia and the inimitable Catherine O’Hara also star, nudging it up the must-see list. And it looks like The Firm meets Painkiller, which sounds like the recipe for a compelling thrill ride.
- Release Date:Oct 27, 2023
- Streamer: Prime Video
- Genre: Crime drama
