With the Grammys behind us, it’s time for the world’s premier award show. For movie fans, at least.
Maybe you’re planning an Oscar Party complete with bingo cards and a dress code. Or perhaps you’re simply spending a quiet night at home with your Oscar score card. Either way, here’s all you need on how to watch the Oscars without cable in 2024—and where to stream Oscar nominees before the big night.
When are the 2024 Oscars?
Let’s get to the important stuff first.
The 96th Academy Awards are on Sunday, March 10, 2024. For the 2 big time zones they are at:
- 4:00 PM (PT)
- 7:00 PM (ET)
You can watch Oscars Nominations Announcements and other pre-show goodies for free on youtube.com/@Oscars, the official channel of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
When does the Oscars Red Carpet start?
For some people it’s more about the red carpet than the actual awards ceremony.
This year ABC begins its Oscars coverage at 10 AM (PT) / 1 PM (ET) with Countdown to Oscars 95: The Red Carpet Live. The Oscars pre-show follows at 3:30 PM (PT) / 6:30 PM (ET) on ABC.
E! Live from the Red Carpet starts at 2 PM (PT) / 5 PM (ET) on E!.
How to stream this year’s Academy Awards
The Oscars are the longest-running awards show televised live across the US and around the world. First televised on NBC in 1953, the Academy Awards went back and forth between the Peacock network and ABC until 1976, when the latter began its uninterrupted broadcast reign.
The current contract has ABC as the Oscar host until 2028, which means don’t expect them to be streaming on Peacock for at least 5 years. (And maybe even longer.)
Unfortunately for our wallets, ABC’s on-demand streaming service Hulu doesn’t offer a live feed of local ABC affiliates the same way that Peacock (NBC) and Paramount+ (CBS) do. That means you’ll need a live TV streaming service with ABC to watch the Oscars without cable.
Watch the Oscars live on ABC
The reason that Hulu’s premium on-demand plan doesn’t include local ABC affiliates is because it offers a complete live TV streaming service of its own, Hulu + Live TV.
However, Hulu + Live TV is obviously not the only live TV streaming service with ABC.
There are (much) cheaper options—such as Sling TV and Vidgo—but you naturally get fewer channels. Hulu + Live TV also includes Hulu (on-demand), Disney+, and ESPN+. So it’s a good package if you’re looking for a streaming bundle the whole family can enjoy.
But if you’re just looking for ABC and a few more things to watch, Sling TV is worth checking out.
These are the live TV streaming services with ABC:
- DirecTV Stream
- Fubo
- Hulu + Live TV
- Sling TV (Select markets only)
- Vidgo
- YouTube TV
Check out the official ABC Oscars web portal for all the the updates and the inside scoop before you watch the 96th Oscars.

How to watch the Oscars for free
As mentioned above, you’ll need a live TV streaming service with ABC to watch the Oscars live without cable. And as also stated, there is no Hulu + Live TV free trial. There’s also no free trial for Sling TV or Vidgo.
But don’t worry, there are still a few live TV streaming services that have free trials. Here’s how long the free trials are for the live TV streaming services with ABC:
- DirecTV Stream free trial: 5 days
- Fubo free trial: 7 days
- YouTube TV free trial: 7 to 30 days
Where to stream Oscar nominees before the ceremony
There were 321 feature films that were eligible for the Oscars this year and 265 of them were eligible for Best Picture. While not all of the films have made it to streaming platforms yet—such as Poor Things, which has 11 nominations—but you can certainly make a dent in the list.
Here’s where you can stream Oscar-nominated movies before the Awards so you can make your predictions a little more meaningful. The number is parentheses is how many nominations the film has. No parentheses means it’s been nominated in a single category.
