It came as a surprise to absolutely nobody that the greatest video game adaptation ever made had been renewed for a second season a week after its debut.

But when will Fallout Season 2 come out? And what will it be about, where will it take us, and who will be in it? Here’s everything we know so far—which isn’t a helluva lot—and a healthy dose of speculation.

Season One already ranks among Prime Video’s top three most-watched titles ever.

About Amazon

When is Fallout Season 2 coming out?

It’s only been a few weeks, so everything at this point is a best guess. But the internet thrives on speculation, so let’s throw our Trilby Hat in the pot and see if that +1 Charisma pays off.

There is no official release date for Fallout Season 2 yet, of course. It was only just confirmed on April 18. And while the second season of Amazon’s Fallout series is still in early development, it is in development.

A lot of predictions around the web aren’t overly optimistic, pegging a late-2025 or early-2026 release date. But we might be seeing our Wasteland friends and frenemies sooner than that.

Fallout Season 1 production timeline

The first season of Amazon’s Fallout series locked in showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner in January 2022. The main cast was assembled from February to June 2022, but casting continued until October for recurring vault dwellers and other characters.

However, filming started in July 2022, before casting was complete. The series was filmed in New Jersey, New York, and Utah—and in Namibia, along Africa’s southwestern coast. Filming wrapped on March 24, 2023 in Utah, then moved into post-production.

And then Hollywood went on strike.

But even with the two simultaneous strikes that delayed nearly every TV show and movie in America, Amazon moved Fallout’s release date even earlier.

Fallout Season 2 production outlook

Most of the filming for Fallout Season 2 will take place in California, which is one factor that will help streamline production. Furthermore, all of the major casting is in place and a lot of the gear and sets are already made.

Using Season 1 as a benchmark, we can expect filming Fallout Season 2 to get done within 9 months. Add a 3 to 4 months of post-production bumps the time line up to 12 to 13 months.

Of course, they still need to write the second season of Fallout. But they won’t be starting from scratch and judging by how Season 1 ends, they know where they’re heading. Allowing a generous 6 months to write Fallout Season 2, that puts the full process at 18 to 19 months.

But with rumors that filming is scheduled to start this September, writing won’t even take that long.

Nine months from September gets us to June, and 3 months from that arrives back in September. This means we can expect to see Fallout Season 2 in Fall 2025. Or even late summer.

And gut feelings say earlier than later.

🙈 SPOILER ALERT

The following section contains spoilers. OBVIOUSLY!

Where will Fallout Season 2 take place?

The key setting of the Fallout universe is The Wasteland. But the games and DLCs traverse a wide range of places, from California to Massachusetts to Alaska and beyond.

And anyone who’s played the Fallout video games recognized what lies in the distance at the end of the final episode of Fallout Season 1.

New Vegas.

To the uninitiated, Fallout: New Vegas is the best game in the series. It was the only one made by Obsidian Entertainment, but it succeeded in creating the greatest stories, locations, and moments in the Fallout collection. It’s also the strongest in terms of RPG elements.

And while we can expect some of Fallout’s second season to take place in New Vegas, things will no doubt move around.

There is certainly Vault 33 to think about. As well as Vault 31, Vault 32, and Vault 4.

And with the Brotherhood of Steel and the NCR rejoicing and regrouping, respectively, there are bound to be new locales discovered and introduced.

What will Fallout Season 2 be about?

Fallout: New Vegas has the strongest narrative of all the games and—regardless of how Bethesda head Todd Howard feels about the game his studio didn’t make—it gives the Fallout showrunners a lot to work with. It won’t be surprising to see some story elements of Fallout: New Vegas make their way into the second season.

However, the Fallout TV series is not a story adaptation of the games. It’s an addition to them. And there are plenty of story lines developing. In spite of what the predictable naysayers say, with plots and subplots galore, Fallout lore only grows richer.

Lucy and The Ghoul

The main story will most likely follow Lucy and The Ghoul—who formed and uneasy alliance in the final episode—as they embark on a quest to track down Hank (Lucy’s dad). We can expect Lucy to both level up and gear up further in Season 2 as The Ghoul finds more of his former self, Cooper Howard, movie star.

As Lucy aims to confront her father, The Ghoul seeks answers about the location of his wife and daughter—and if they were cryogenically frozen.

Maximus and the Brotherhood of Steel

But we’ve also got Maximus back with the Brotherhood of Steel—who believe he’s the one who slayed Moldaver. With his newfound hero status and growing influence in the Brotherhood, he’ll also no doubt still be pining for Lucy.

The secrets of the Vaults

There are a whole lot of stories hidden in the Vaults. From the elitist beginnings of Vault 31 to the tragedy of Vault 32 to the dark past of Vault 4, mysteries abound underground.

Before the bombs

We’ve also got the pre-bombs flashback timelines to consider, particularly the breakdown of Cooper and Barb’s marriage, the derailing of his career, and her role in the nuclear war.

Who will be in Fallout Season 2

The cast has yet to be confirmed and no new cast members have been announced, but it’s a near-guarantee that all of the following will return:

  • Walton Goggins (The Ghoul/Cooper Howard)
  • Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean)
  • Aaron Moten (Maximus)
  • Kyle MacLachlan (Hank MacLean)
  • Frances Turner (Barb Howard)
  • Moisés Arias as (Norm MacLean)
  • Leslie Uggams (Betty Pearson)

And these are very likely to return:

  • Xelia Mendes-Jones (Dane)
  • Johnny Pemberton (Thaddeus)
  • Zach Cherry (Woody)
  • Dave Register (Chet)
  • Annable O’Hagen (Stephanie)

Is there a Fallout Season 2 trailer?
