The new live-action Knuckles TV series premieres today on Paramount+.
The near-universal critical acclaim for HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout TV series raised the bar for video game adaptations. While the bar admittedly wasn’t very high to begin with—if there even was one—those 2 shows launched it into the stratosphere.
To be fair, Sonic has a long history on the small screen (with a hundred-plus episodes across 3 animated series in the 90s) and 2 successful feature films this decade. But can the live-action Knuckles series follow in the post-apocalyptic footsteps of TLOU and Fallout?
Before watching the latest entry into the Sonic Universe, here’s a quick Q&A about the Knuckles TV series.
What (or who) is Knuckles?
Full name Knuckles the Echidna, Knuckles is a bright red short-beaked echidna (also called a spiny anteater) and a key character in Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog video game series.
A former rival of Sonic, the two eventually became friends—or at least frenemies—and roommates.
Who is the voice of Knuckles?
Knuckles has been voiced by many people over the years across video games, animated shows, and movies.
When it comes to animation, an actor’s voice can make or break a show. Fortunately, Knuckles is portrayed by someone who’s up there with Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, and James Earl Jones. With voices as smooth as a shot of Rémy Martin Louis XIII, they could make reading the phone book interesting.
In the current Sonic Cinematic Universe, Knuckles first makes an appearance in the 2022 feature film Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He was voiced by Idris Elba, who thankfully continues to portray the red menace in the new Knuckles TV show. He’ll also be back in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film.

How many episodes is the Knuckles TV show?
The new Knuckles series on Paramount+ is 6 episodes.
How long are episodes of Knuckles?
While the initial word on the street was that episodes would be about an hour long each, that’s far from the reality of the situation. Rounded to the nearest minute, the run-time for each Knuckles episode is as follows:
- Episode 1: 33 minutes
- Episode 1: 25 minutes
- Episode 1: 28 minutes
- Episode 1: 24 minutes
- Episode 1: 31 minutes
- Episode 1: 29 minutes
That’s a total of roughly 170 minutes. And that’s about as long as your average superhero movie nowadays, so it should be no problem binging the entire series in one go.
With it taking just under 3 hours to watch the whole season, you could easily pull an all-nighter to watch the whole Knuckles series and still make it to work or school in the morning. You could even get a few hours sleep.
When is the Knuckles TV series premiere?
The Knuckles TV series premieres Friday, April 26 exclusively on Paramount+.
But if the day is too general for you and you wondering about the exact time Knuckles premieres, Paramount+ releases its new shows and movies at 12:00 AM Pacific time.
That’s not so bad for people on the West Coast who want to check out the first episode (or two). But it’s unlikely very many people on the East Coast will be up to start watching it at 3:00 AM.
Are all Knuckles episodes being released at once?
Yes!
All 6 episodes of the Knuckles TV show will be available to stream upon release.
What other Sonic shows and movies are on Paramount+?
If you’re a fan of the “Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog”, you can also stream Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Paramount+. The Knuckles series takes place between the second movie and the upcoming theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
