According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s production list website about movies and TV shows that are—surprise, surprise—in production, Summer Of ’69 starts filming next month.

The overview of the show is nothing like that Bryan Adams song from the 80s and it most likely has nothing to do with the year 1969. From the project summary:

When Abby discovers her high school crush’s favorite sexual position, she plans to learn the sexual ropes with the hired help of a local stripper. But when Abby realizes she may not be ready to take things to the next level, she learns that she’s gained so much more a sense of self and a lifelong friend.

That definitely makes it sound like Summer Of ’69 is about sixty-nining. As in simultaneous reciprocal oral sex. Not about the summer Jimmy quit and Jody got married.

Although the apostrophe remains a bit of a mystery. Does it serve as double entendre, thereby making this a period piece as well? Only time will tell.

Who is in Summer Of ’69?

The only cast member currently (visibly) attached to the project is Meredith Hagner, who starred as Portia Davenport in HBO’s Search Party. Considering she’s unlikely to play the part of a high school student, we can boldly predict that she stars as the local stripper/mentor.

The other name attached to the project is an SNL alum, but behind the camera. While she joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and not a cast member, most people will still recognize Jillian Bell from in front of the camera elsewhere. (Or recognize her voice.)

She’s better known as comedic actress, with a main role in Workaholics and the creator and star of Idiotsitter. She also portrayed evil elf Pepper in last year’s underrated Candy Cane Lane and voiced Lex Lightning for 42 episodes of Crackle original series SuperMansion.

Aside from a 5-minute music video in 2022, the comedy series marks Bell’s directorial debut.

Where will Summer Of ’69 be streaming?

While there’s still no information about which streaming service Summer Of ’69 is on, that can’t stop us from making predictions.

Jillian Bell has ties to NBC through writing for SNL as well as acting roles on various network shows, which could help the show land on Peacock.

On the other hand, both Hagner and Bell have ties to HBO, although Bell less so. Hagner starred in Search Party for 5 seasons and appeared in a couple of episodes of Veep. So there’s a case to be made for Max.

The plot summary for Summer ‘Of 69 certainly sounds like the kind of sexy, edgy show that HBO has been known for. But without network watchdogs to worry about, CBS and NBC are more than happy to let loose on their respective streaming platforms.

There is a possibility it doesn’t land on a streaming service at all. Bell not only starred in Comedy Central’s Workaholics for 7 seasons, the cable channel developed Bell’s Idiotsitter as a web series for its CC: Studios before moving it to Comedy Central proper.

However, Comedy Central is owned by Paramount Global, which creates a path for Summer Of ’69 to land on Paramount+.

What’s your prediction for where we’ll be able to watch Summer Of ’69 when it finally arrives?

And if you’re looking for some laughs in the meantime, the new season of Ghosts just dropped on Paramount+. Sam, Jay and the remaining ghosts unravel the mystery of which ghost passed into the afterlife.
