Originally called Dexter: Origins, the Dexter prequel is already in production and set to start filming at the start of June. So can we expect a Dexter: Original Sin release date in 2024?
Read on for all we currently know about the show and predictions about when it might premiere.
TLDR:
When is the Dexter: Original Sin release date?
The show is set to begin filming next week, so the release date for Dexter: Original Sin has not been announced yet.
However, we can make some predictions based on the production schedules of the previous two Dexter shows. In fact, the Dexter Daily did a lot of the legwork already and offers some good insights in its Instagram post.

As the original Dexter series—which had 12 episodes per season—took 15 days to shoot a single episode, if Dexter: Original Sin follows a similar schedule, its 8-episode season would require 120 days in total of filming. That amounts to 4 months, but there’s also post-production to consider.
That means an October release is highly unlikely.
After adding 1–2 weeks of post-production per episode—or another 2½ to 4 months in total—a December or January release date seems much more plausible.
And seeing as all but one of the seasons of Dexter (including Dexter: New Blood) premiered September through November, we betting that we’ll see Dexter Morgan return before the New Year.
When does Dexter: Original Sin take place?
Dexter: Original Sin is set in Miami and it takes place in 1991. Dexter is 20 years old during this first season of the show. His sister Deb is 17, and dad Harry is still alive.

What is Dexter: Original Sin about?
In case you’ve been living in a cave or a convent since 2006, Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter expert with the (fictional) Miami Metro Police Department.
He’s also a serial killer.
With a code.
He only kills bad people.
The crime drama Dexter ran for 8 seasons on Showtime, from 2006 to 2013. Dexter Morgan returned in the 2023 limited series Dexter: New Blood, also on Showtime, which catches up with Dexter a decade later.
As the title implies, Dexter: Original Sin goes the other way on the Dexter Morgan timeline, with a 20-year-old Dexter as an intern with Miami Metro. The series focuses on the events leading up to and surrounding Dexter’s first kill.

Who’s in Dexter: Original Sin?
In the 2 series so far, Dexter has been portrayed by Michael C. Hall. And despite the internet whining—”There is only one Dexter!”— having the 53-year-old actor reprise his role for the prequel is a ridiculous notion.
And while Hall will serve as an executive producer on the show, Dexter fanboys are already bashing the show and decrying its new lead.
So who is the new Dexter Morgan?
Dexter: Original Sin show stars Patrick Gibson as the young version of the iconic titular character. The 29-year-old Irish actor’s resume includes roles in The OA and Shadow and Bone on Netflix, The White Princess on Starz, and The Tudors on Showtime (which is now part of Paramount+).
The other 2 main cast members are Dexter’s family. Christian Slater co-stars as Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown plays a young Deb, his adoptive sister.
Other returning characters include a 30-year-old Angel Batista, a 20-year-old Vince Masuka, and a young Maria LaGuerta. They’ll be joined by Tom Matthews (before he becomes Captain then Deputy Chief), records supervisor and family friend Camilla Figg, and Dexter’s mom.

Where to watch Dexter: Original Sin
Like the 2 shows before it—the original Dexter and Dexter: New Blood—the third series in the Dexterverse is being produced by Showtime. However, in January 2024 the channel was rebranded as Paramount+ with Showtime (although “Showtime” still exists on its own for marketing purposes and its multiplex channels).
That means you’ll be able to watch Dexter: Original Sin on Showtime in the US and on Paramount+ in other markets. Of course, Paramount+ subscribers in the US with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan will also be able to watch the show.
